Pitt was widely known for his vehement hatred of france in general and bonaparte above all others. His death seemed to bring that dream a little closer. At the very least, France's greatest enemy had lost its wisest and most dynamic leader back on the continent. Almost the entire hapsburg military had been destroyed or scattered. The only major organized force still in the field was archduke charles's army which continued to bleed casualties as it was pursued out of italy. In short, the french seemed unstoppable, and the austrians had little left with which to oppose them.
