How Slavery Was Integral to Wine Production in South Africa

Slavery was integral to wine production in colonial South Africa. Wine producers really guarded the right to keep slaves, says historian John Boulden. One of the ways that wine owners did this is by using what's called the Dopp or the Tots system. Workers are paid all or partly in alcohol and don't have ready cash so they can't move easily.
