The Palmer Raids

Under Palmer's orders the general intelligence division launched a major battle in his war on anarchist and dissidents. Hoover directed the largest in a series of violent arrests that became known as the Palmer raids Government agents in 33 cities broke down doors and detained thousands of poor factory workers Labor department officials acting on Bureau of Investigation warrants filed flimsy charges based on tenuous connections to allegedly radical elements Some of the detainees were not charged for weeks after the raids. The raids snared citizens and non-citizens alike in all Ten thousand alleged anarchists communists pacifists socialists labor activists and others were jailed. Ultimately only 500 radicals were deported many of them without a fair hearing.
