In the mid 1970s, Synonon's repression of its own members ramped up in ways that were even more intense and eventually violent. Most histories of the cult will trace the tipping point to one specific moment in the summer of 1973 when Deirich poured a can of root beer over a woman who kept interrupting his no-mick utterances. Some wondered whether he'd gone crazy, but his more devoted followers preferred to see it as a sign, a call to arms.
