Most histories of the cult will trace the tipping point to one specific moment in the summer of 1973 when Deirich poured a can of root beer over a woman who kept interrupting his no-mick utterances. Some wondered whether he'd gone crazy, but his more devoted followers preferred to see it as a sign, a call to arms.
