If someone is confidentially looking than you need to be hypersensitive and likely build a reference process around what is going to be most comfortable for that candidate. One of the things i always stress in the searches that i'm involved with with referencing, as you don't want to do any level of referencing if it's going to jeopardize someone. I've seen countless times that people reach out to someone to get a data point, not thinking about how that get back to the candidate.
