President Lincoln was re-nominated by the Republicans in June 1864. With the war stalled, a new Lincoln remained vulnerable at the polls. Many Americans expected General George McClellan to emerge as his nominee. The Democrats were still divided into pro- and anti-war factions. Southerners hoped that if McClellan won, he would end the war and recognize Confederate independence.
