Introduction

Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo: JAMA Editor's Summary is a review of important research and review articles appearing in the latest JAMA issue. Two reports were published online, simultaneous with the presentation of the results at the European Society for Intensive Care Medicine at the end of October. They are part of JAMA's Caring for the Critically Ill Patient section. The first is a randomized clinical trial on the effect of selective decontamination of the digestive tract on hospital mortality in critically ill patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
