King James II was a self confident ruler who took on very formidable opponents from a comparatively young age. The story of his reign was his long rearguard action against the attempts of the more radical clerics to get lar power out of the church. He also made sure that the general assembly of the kirk could only meet when called by the king, just like parliament. But slowly he forcedbi s back on to their seas running their provinces.
