Alexander Rose: I don't think a laptop computer that lasts only three years is worth what we ask for in return from our society, our culture, and our resources. According to the executive director of the Long Now Foundation, we should be looking at something closer to 10,000 years. He says if civilization was ever going to solve the really big problems, we'd need to start thinking long term.
