Hobbes believes that the natural life of man will be solitary and brutish. He says we can take steps to avoid war by talking to each other. The fear of death is the beginning of wisdom, he argues. But how do we get to a position where we are genuinely safe? Well, we have to covenant. And in covenanting with someone who should be our sovereign, we create an artificial person - i.e. my representative.
