What Is This Book About?
The first rule of analytical reading, according to mortimer adler, set forth the major parts of the book. Find out what the author's problems were that they're trying to solve with that proposition. What is the issue at hand? What is the thing that is lacking, or the things that are there that they don't want to be there, that they're Trying to solve by writing the book? Ad you go through those four and you should have very well pigeon holed that book into some crevice of your mind so that it's well defined enough that you can dive in and know what you're getting into when you first dive in.
