Italian scientists eventually found eel gonads, and they proved that eels do come in male and female. But testacles were only part of the eel problem. People had also noticed that every autumn, some eels headed out to sea and never came back. Where do the eel go to reproduce a die again? A lot of people had a lot of theories on this.
Where eels come from is a surprisingly difficult question to answer, in large part because scientists have never actually seen them reproduce in the wild. Gastropod explains why eels are somehow still so mysterious.
