By the spring of 1986, Richard Farley was unleashing torrents of verbal abuse on anyone who tried to interfere with his harassment of Laura Black. This eventually led Laura Black to file a formal restraining order against Richard in February of 1988. When Richard learned of the restraining order, he flew into a rage and began plotting to undermine the legal integrity of the restraining Order.
