President Richard Nixon had two vacancies on the supreme court. He wanted to appoint a woman, but was pressured by his wife and daughters. The chief justice wrote out a letter of resignation if he were to be appointed. It is now possible that richard nixon's major achievement in american government will be that he was in office when, for at least one year, there were vacant Supreme Court seats.
