History That Doesn't Suck

CHAPTER

Leroy Johnston and the Elaine Race Massacre

Leroy Johnston, a member of the 15th New York Army National Guard died in Arkansas last July. The four Johnsons were killed by race-based violence and slaughter during 1919's Red Summer. Their murder highlights how many black Americans feel as they find that valiant service in the Great War hasn't put an end to lynching and other deadly acts of the Jim Crow era.
