The Importance of Building a New Building

In 1872 the city council proposed a total ban on wooden buildings in favor of brick and stone construction. The move sparked anger among working class immigrants who feared they wouldn't be able to rebuild their homes at all. Construction ramped up for nearly two years as investors poured money into the city. In September 1873 residents fled again sending the nation into a depression that would linger for six years. A railroad building boom in the midwest gave the city a much needed economic boost.
