The head of Angus Stewart leered up at me from the ground. A sudden thought struck him that since our struggle on arriving with Callum Mackenzie, neither myself nor Constable Ross had made any noise at all. If there were survivors they had no way to know it was safe. Neither of us could pretend we cared about preserving evidence at that point. These people, good people, had slaughtered each other for no reason at all. There was nothing we could do to change that fact. And I thank God every day that not one resident of that poor, doomed place had children.
