COMPLEXITY

CHAPTER

The Tension Between Free Will and Self-Determination

Fichte says the self posits its own being. And that's a very powerful idea, sparked on the ideas of the French Revolution. Some people are terrified by it because they think free will is going to bring down the world. But others, like the younger generation in Yena, absolutely thrilled by these ideas. So what they do is they take this philosophy and they live it. This is I think where they're not doing something for the common good. The idea is also to do something for yourself. That was not selfishness as we understand it today.
