The US Census reported this week that only five states have seen a growth in their population of children aged zero to four. The birth rate still remains very high and above replacement in ultra-religious or extremely religious communities. Having a family has become, if you like, quite low status, particularly among middle class and educated women. There's an interplay of psychology and the economy, which we need to get hold of.
