In ancient greece and rome, the naked statue becomes a high prized art object. You're supposed to see it as an object of beauty, but you're not supposed to be erotically attracted to it. So they almost become like a sort of lydmus test of your own morality. And again, certain things assist in this, so that, for example, in greek art, it was never particularly socially acceptable to depict an erection.
