Jurassic Park
In the mid-90s, I got a copy of Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park. It was after having read other sci-fi and other things that my dad had provided for me. He describes this kind of hollowing out of academic science where what happens is that if you want to be on the cutting edge, you have to do commercial science.
