By the fourteenth century or so, a great deal of material had been lost. A fewer knew greek, let alone a hebrew, syriac or other ancient languages. The technology of paper making from wood pulp was learned from china and made its way into europe. And this made it possible to produce more undant, inexpensive writing materials to put texts on in the first place.
