The Cambrian Explosion, the Construction of Animal Diversity

The Cambrian Explosion, the Construction of Animal Diversity is a book co-written with James Valentine. Life evolved probably three and a half billion years ago; eukaryotic cells appeared maybe two billion to eight billion years ago. The first animals weren't found until about 800 million years ago: macroscopic fossils that look like animals. About 540 million years ago is in the midst of what we call the Cambrian Explosion. That's the appearance of essentially all the different types of animals that we find in the oceans.
