The Role of Argonine and Citrulline in the Management of Hyperaminemia

IV arginine hydrochloride is used as part of the initial management of metabolic decompensation in all forms of urea cycle defects. Blood pressure should be monitored in patients who are given IV arginine as frequently these patients may have hypotension. We should also monitor these patients similar to aminol for hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. In OTC or CPSI deficiency small oral doses of citrulline provided because incorporating aspartate nitrogen may improve clearance as urea.
