When he was young, a little red, everything that Marx had ever written. He never joined the French Communist Party. But for most of the 20th century in France, it's worth noting that Marxism was seen as a very progressive and morally positive idea. So, while a little recognized that it's impossible to be both a Christian and then truly Marxist, he never less owed a debt to Marx.
