The affair of the diamond necklace was in 1787 and it was the final straw. A couple of years later Jean was running away from a bailiff and forcing a debt and she either jumped or fell from a balcony window and died. The next two years were a downward spiral for the French monarchy. So when May 5th, 1789 came around and we're back to the main storyline now, France was done with it. Just all of it.
