Each year there's around 60 different butterfly species that could be seen in britain. And amongst these are seven small, fast flying species that we call the blues because of their distinctive cerulian wing colours. Britain's blues all belong to a large family of butterflies called the licinide which compisesof around six thousand species world wide. Many members have evolved mamecaphilus associations, which means they interact with ants and often care for them inside their nests. But why might ants do this? Well, even after centuries of study, it remains an enigma as to whos manipulating who, or whether it's just the true symbiotic partnership.
