The Story of Whistler's Portrait

The painting was sent to the u.s in 1876 after his mother had passed away earlier that year. It became a kind of american icon it's become this icon across the world of course but it was a much later tour of the states in which suddenly it started gaining a significance. The portrait has led to all sorts of things including statues and a direct association with motherhood exactly so i think once it's the painting is acquired by the french government in 1891 it begins to grow in popularity.
