What Are the Factors in Strikes?

We tend to assume that we know how strikes work and where the leverage of organised workers lies. The effectiveness of a given strike is influenced by all sorts of factors from the sector in which the strike is occurring. Unions essentially are trying to inflict a cost on the employer through their disruption. What it looks like to cause disruption is really different and what works in one place might not work in another.
