The Sacrament of Holy Orders

Holy orders is the sacrament through which the Church entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. The word order in Roman antiquity designated an established civil body, especially a governing body. Ordination is also called consacrazio, for it is a setting apart and an investiture by Christ himself for his Church. On their part, Christian spouses are fortified and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and dignity of their state by a special sacrament.
