Are There Two Consciousnesses?
There's one seamless consciousness that I have, he says. And it becomes obvious as soon as you knock one out and you can experimentally knock a hemisphere out for 15, 20 minutes. When you do that, it's quite clear that the person doesn't lose consciousness. Half their brain is switched off, but they've still got consciousness. That consciousness is significantly different if it's in the left or the right hemisphere. There are reliable considerable differences. So we don't notice that they're different because they're blended below the level of awareness as we lead our lives headlong.
