Researchers used an anonymity technology to test whether people are more likely to cooperate with their friends or strangers. They found that even in a setting where those friends you cooperate with will never know if you cooperated with them, there's still some degree of directed altruism. This suggests opportunities for applications to make use of essentially cost sensitive information between users - but that only makes sense when that information isn't just published and leaked.
