CHAPTER

The Lonesome George Tortoise

Pinter tortoises were over-exploited by whalers, fur sealers and other people in the 1800s. It was believed that these tortoises went extinct in the early 20th century but then George was just like discovered in the 1970s. In the spring of 1972, the rangers of the Galapagos National Park moved this tortoise to a tortoise center in Santa Cruz for its protection. The American media began to refer to this tortoise as Lonesome George.
