The Effects of Lack of Sleep on Gene Expression
A lack of sleep can erode the very fabric of biological life itself, which is your DNA genetic code. In one study, they limited a group of otherwise completely healthy adults to six hours of sleep. They measured the change in their gene activity profile relative to those same subjects when they were getting eight hours of sleep and found 711 genes had been changed by insufficient sleep. Those genes that were actually amplified or over exaggerated included ones associated with stress and cardiovascular disease.
