The author argues that the unhistorical and the historical are equally necessary to the health of either an individual, a people or a culture. He's going to go over these three types of history: monumental, antiquarian and critial. So he's going to tell us the ways in which they can be good for each other. And if life can maintain its own control, then history can actually serve it well.
