Mike Bigelow: I've heard the advice to try and be a helpful resource when meeting new people. And some recommend outright asking, how can I be a help to you? He says that although it comes off as very kind and it is very nice and it feels like a good gesture, it isn't always that helpful because most people won't know that. But if we really want to take it two or three levels up, what we can do instead is be able to steer the conversation and interaction to where we can understand how we can be of help to someone else.
One of the best ways to gain momentum during your career search is to reach out to employees at the company you want to work for, specifically key decision-makers. This will allow you to stand out among the sea of 500-1,000+ applications. When you go to make these connections, there are some simple, yet overlooked, strategies that are very effective to not only receive a response when doing this deliberate networking, but all get a response that could propel you into the role you are aiming for.
