The Problem With Free Agents
The rule used to be that their new salary at the start of the exception can be 20% above the salary in the last year of the contract. The problem is if the players market value was way higher than that, then the player was not going to sign for that 20% or extend for that 20%. So it could be a situation where before free agency, the team and the player both want to pay the player more. It brings more sanity to the free agent market teams aren't going to be wondering, oh, it's just going to be free.
