A legend is an attempt to explain the inexplicable - it is bound to end in the inexplicable. Ben: I'd never encountered that sort of oddly domestic aspect of Kafka. Do you think that these short pieces fragments show him in a different light or are they very consistent with what you'd already read? Both. They're really unexpected. Only Kafka could make the cotton of a loaf of bread into an epic absurdity. And then the farmer was to me a real revelation.
