The Failure of the Brain to Cause Conscious Experiences

We want a mathematical precise theory. Why should this brain activity cause the taste of chocolate? And what would I have to do to change the brain activity to make it be the feeling of velvet? This is not philosophy anymore. This is science. We want mathematically precise rules that tie specific kinds of brain activity to specific conscious experiences in a principled way that makes new predictions. The hard problem is our failure, despite an enormous amount of trying, to figure out how from inert matter consciousness can arise.
