Is Diversification a Good Idea for Long Term Investors?

One of the reasons why we diversify is to avoid catastrophic losses. So how likely are stocks to deliver catastrophic losses as opposed to just you know, garden variety losses? Yeah. That's from the 13% overall loss probability. And so we estimate a five chance that you're going to lose at least half of your buying power over a 30 year period. Wow. What? I mean, it's obviously unlikely, but it's basically minus 80% with the 1% chance. That is nuts.
