The period between 19 o seven and 19 12 was going to turn out to be not the beginning of a great imperial renewal, but the eye of the hurricane of war and revolution. The fuel that brought the smouldering embers of working class activism back to full flame was the lena goldfield massacre of april 19 12. Just as had happened in 19 o four, criticism of the ca scorrupt and incompetent management of the empire abroad was going to start merging with resurgent working class anger. All combining to make nicholas believe, by the summer of 19 14, that all the pieces were moving back into place for a return of social and political revolution.
