As a junior i maxed out at what our high school taught in terms of mathematics. I knew i wasn't that good at math but everyone else seemed to and so i changed majors. How do you balance this idea of the stories we tell ourselves are going to limit us versus the amount of effort we want to put in? We have to change those ideas the story you told of yourself, he says.

Dr. Jo Boaler is the Nomellini-Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford University and co-founder of www.youcubed.org. She is the author of eleven books including What's Math Got To Do With It? and Mathematical Mindsets. Dr. Boaler was also a White House presenter on equity.
