I love this idea of having safe spaces for mediocrity. My father was a big gardener and he would boast that there's not a single right angle in the entire thing. I began life as a very, very serious age class runner who thought that running was about winning races. That is the craziest, stupid, and most self-defeating notion that I ever had. You aren't going to win Olympic medals, but who are not badly? It doesn't matter if you run a four-hour marathon; it's totally fine.
