Roxanne Jones: flare stars would make it harder for life to evolve or at least lifelike hours. Maybe that kind of environment would lead to totally different kinds of life, she says. There's one more issue with life developing around these red dwarfs is that in the systems we have studied so far, we see fewer large gas giants, basically fewer Jupiters. So it might mean more big impacts like the ones that wiped out the dinosaurs.
