The Oppositional Gaze

She says that in her segregated neighbourhood, where their only connection to white culture and white people was through television. She found that she would interrogate what was seen on the screen; many of her friends and family would do the same. And so in that interrogation, in that opposition, it gave birth to a desire, a desire to make different images. The essay isn't about looking abstractly, so to speak. It's about looking at television, looking at cinema, looking at film.
