The framers at the constitutional convention in philadelphia were so committed to the idea of compromise as part of the scaffolding of american governments, they had drawn a path forward that always was going to accommodate slavery. So over the course of the 18 fifties, you will remember, there were lots compromises over slavery. But this all leaves neither side fully satisfied. Red northerners are unhappy; Southerners are unhappy. And so by the late 18 50s, the sort of failures of these compromises had raised the level of tension in the nation to a fever pitch,. making it even more difficult to find compromise over the issue of slavery.
