What's Going on in the Labor Market?

The unemployment rate remained at 3.5% in September, but the number of persons employed increased by only 900. The underutilization rate, which is a combination of the unemployment and underemployed rate, slightly increased to 9.6%. Plus, job vacancies have pulled back from their recent peaks as well. Consumer sentiment data, we saw consumer sentiment index decline to 83.7 in October from a reading of 84.4 in September. So sentiment remains deeply entrenched in negative territory. We continue to keep spending.
