CHAPTER

The History of Haiti

In 1791, the slaves of Haiti rose up in revolution against the French colonial system. Under the leadership of Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Desalines, they fought against all the odds to liberate their country. They actually expelled the French army when it was at its height. In 1804, Sandoming changed its name to Haiti and became the first free black republic in the world.
