The underlying issue is a little more complicated than gas or no gas, right? What happens is that russia wants to be paid for its gas in roubles or at the russian currency. That way european countries have to keep buying roubles, which keeps the currency alive. So i understand why russia is so mad at getting paid in a currency that they don't want.
