Are Gamma Particles Really a Bad Thing?

i remember reading something about a tesslas work with x rays, and he was able to do them a little bit differently. It's reported that he had actually developed a system where he could use a gama particles or x rays to photograph someone from up to 20 feet away. That is so far beyond what we can currently do.
